Gagudju, Yellow Water Cruise
Not content to swim in the same waters with crocs, Catherine insisted that we light out on a croc-watching cruise. Sunset was approaching, and we were drunk, so we capitulated, lest she, herself, bite off our heads.
I would almost dare to venture that we were, for many, the highlight (some might say downside) of the cruise. “Snap snap snap” went our multiple cameras.
I was switching between video and still, but, I will say, doing my best to stay out of the way of the others on the boat.
The ride had many highlights. First, the birds out there were amazing.
The egrets in all of their glorious reflections.
Pelicans:
Geese:
Whistling ducks:
Jabarus with their young. They were so stork-like yet (utterly) unique:
Darters eating fish:
and drying their feathers:
Sea eagles:
Most entertaining were these little guys were called Rufus Gamehens or something like that:
because what they were doing
was trying to ambush this small crocodile:
who just sat there with his jaws gaping:
as if waiting for something to wander in:
Wonder what might make him think something would just wind up in his mouth?
I dubbed him Lockjaw.
And then there were the larger crocs.
One came right up to the boat:
as I snapped a shot of a bird:
Once I saw it and tried to back away Catherine tried to do the world a favor and push me in. She still won’t get over the fact that I wasn’t eaten that day. She likes, as she says, the thrill of capturing “Blood on the lens.”
And then there was the sunset.
Catherine
and Tim
both took amazing sunset shots:
We headed back towards the dock, accompanied by the reflections in the glassy water,
leaving the "Alligator" River for the birds and the crocs:
and freshened up before hitting the karaoke jam with all of the other tourists. For five bucks I’ll offer up a video snippet of Tim
doing a medley rendition of “Sneakin’ Sally Thru the Alley” and “Addicted to Love” with Maya and Catherine on backing vocals…
